Makeup Essentials

I never really wore makeup until I had an interview at Estée Lauder! I was interviewing for design and art director jobs and was curious but anxious of the idea of working in advertising, especially beauty. I knew nothing about either. I did research for the position and decided to get my makeup done at the Bobbi Brown counter at Nordstrom right before my interview. I got a great offer and took the job. It was the beginning of free beauty products and fashion-minded friends.

+ Interesting note: most of the creatives at beauty companies don’t really wear makeup. It’s like most stylists wear really simple attire, usually in black.

Through my job, I got exposed to the idea of really valuing taking care of myself and my skin. I developed the desire to spend a little more effort on how I look and feel. I found a feminine side to me that I love, and I started to notice when I put respect and care into my appearance, it projected outward and created positivity in my interactions with others.

I gained a confidence that I didn’t know I had… not just because I was dressing up and wearing makeup but because I was finding out more about myself through my style. While I don’t really use any of their products anymore, that EL experience was pivotal in my relationship with beauty, and I’m so grateful for it.

Not surprisingly, I prefer a simple, efficient routine with a focus on cleaner products, especially those that go on my skin. I have saved a lot of time and money essentializing this process. I also try not to stress about it too much. Makeup can complement your look and maybe even be fun!

MY DAILY MAKEUP ESSENTIALS:
1. Eyebrow Pencil & Gel: I prefer the Anastasia brand but they don’t have this combo (yet).
2. Lash Curler & Mascara: I worked on the launch of this mascara and I still can’t give it up.
3. Lip & Cheek Stain: I love 2-in-1s! Sometimes I’ll use bronzer instead during the summer.
4. Concealer or “Un" Cover-Up: In a natural brand that I don’t mind sinking into my skin.
5. Clear Lip Gloss: Sometimes homemade!

+ And I’ve already mentioned my CC Cream with SPF that I wear every once in a while.
+ For a little more drama some evenings, I’ll add eyeliner in purple! And I like to get my nails done every few months, usually in a light neutral or white.

Any other complicated relationships with makeup out there? If you had to have only five products, what would they be?
